The Case of the Wild Possum

I live in a rural area outside of my city, where wild animals live all around us.  It is a common thing to see various wildlife when you are driving from the city to my home.  I've seen deer, foxes, possums, raccoons, hawks, coyotes, skunks, porcupines, and more out where I live.  In the city, however, there are few animals beyond the range of domesticated pets and random birds.

So the other day, I was driving to a friend's house.  My friend lives in a nice neighborhood, nestled amongst many other homes.  She doesn't live out in the country like I do.  Her neighborhood is located in the city.

I was driving down her block, and I had almost reached her house when I saw something that made me gasp with surprise.  There was a possum lumbering across the street in front of me... and not only a possum, but possibly the largest possum I had ever seen before in my life.  It was huge!

I snapped a quick picture (which you can see to your left), and then sped three houses down to where my friend lived.  We were about to leave to go somewhere else, so we hopped into a car and began driving down the street.  I wondered where the possum could have gone.  I mean, how could a creature that was bigger than an adult-sized cat just disappear

In a neighborhood full of children and house pets, a loose possum wasn't the greatest thing to have around.

Finally, I spotted something large and gray moving slowly out from beneath a car.  It appeared to be running, but it was not moving very fast.  "It's over there!" I called out, and we pulled over to see the possum disappear beneath a bush in the front yard of an elderly couple who often took care of their young grandchildren.

My friends and I decided that we needed to inform these people that there was a wild possum hiding in their bushes, and so one of my friends darted up to the front door and began frantically telling the old man who lived there about this giant possum.  From the look on his face, I'm sure he thought we were all insane.  He came outside and peered amongst his bushes, and sure enough, there it was, looking meaner than ever.

We left soon after this, but the last thing I heard was that the man was bringing out his gun to kill the creature.  Well, I guess if you're fully armed, then there's no need to call animal control.

Honestly, the whole situation was completely bizarre.

I am glad that the case of the wild possum has been taken care of, and I am glad that he (or she) will not be coming to visit my house any time soon.
