The Big Race

Ice Skating, Part II

A week ago, my mom and grandparents drove all the way to Aggieland to come visit me.  Their trip came somewhat as a surprise and it was so wonderful to be able to see them for the first time in an entire month.

There are many things to do here, especially when you have only two days to do them, so since my new favorite hobby is ice skating, I took my mom along with me last Saturday.  Mom hadn't ice skated in more than two years and when she texted my dad and told him what we were doing, his response was, "Be careful, old lady."  So Mom was a little concerned about the whole balancing thing.

My friends Jonny and Stephanie came along with us.  It was prospective students day at Texas A&M, so traffic was hectic, it was pouring rain outside, and the weather was a little too cool for comfort; however, the ice skating rink wasn't too full.  It was a great day to go skating.

We purchased our skates.  Stephanie and I wobbled for a few moments and then were ready to glide semi-gracefully around the rink.  Jonny, for some reason, was a pro and could skate circles around us all.  My mom had to skate while holding the wall and/or my hand for a couple of rounds, but she eventually got the hang of it and was able to keep up with everyone.

About forty-five minutes after we started skating, Jonny had the bright idea that Stephanie, my mom, and I have a race.  I knew Stephanie would win because she's faster than I am and we knew I would beat my mom, but we all agreed to the race.

Sure enough, Stephanie flew ahead of us all and I sped ahead of my mom, despite the fact that she got a three second headstart.  I was doing fantastic until I slipped and fell hard onto the ice.

I was a little stunned; I hadn't fallen before then and the rough ice stung my hands.  I thought for sure my own mother would stop and make sure I was okay.  Bewildered, I started to clamber to my feet... and I saw that my mom had glanced over her shoulder to make sure I wasn't broken and then raced ahead of me as fast as she possibly could.

So that's how I lost the race that day.

Despite that traumatic experience, I still enjoy ice skating and I still plan to go skating more often.  Hopefully with practice, I won't fall again!
